Third year students pursuing BSc. Forestry 2018/19 conducted insect field survey at SUA Botanical gardens located at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Main Campus on 28th -29th January 2019. A survey aimed at providing a foundation in sampling and collection techniques for insects in agro-ecosystems, natural and planted forest. The survey is based on the course of FBL 301: Forest Protection under Entomology part taught in the class. The survey was organized by Mr. Paulo J. Lyimo assisted by Mr. Cosmas J. Emily of Department of Ecosystems and Conservation (DEC), College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism (CFWT), Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Tanzania.
During practical students gained experience on:
- Using various entomology field equipment in different techniques
- Identify at least 20 insect orders out of 31 and approximately 100 of the 800 families of Tanzania
- where to find most of insect families in the field, and the most appropriate method(s) to use to collect them
- Properly preserve and prepare insects for scientific study and research vouchering
- Using survey data of insects to prioritize conservation management efforts to sensitive areas of forest
