Call for applications for field surveyors for forest inventory and interviews with forestry entrepreneurs

Participatory Plantation Forestry Programme (PFP 2) is a bilateral development programme. It promotes sustainable and inclusive plantation forestry value chains that contribute to socioeconomic development and poverty reduction, focusing on tree-growing smallholders and micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Southern Highlands. It focuses on villages which are already rich in smallholder forestry but where the forest value chains are not yet contributing to poverty reduction in a commensurate manner. It aims to improve wood markets by supporting diversification and quality improvement of wood products, whilst providing knowledge and facilitation for an enabling environment for tree growers to bring their plantations into scientific, commercial production. The PFP 2 promotes increased incomes through business and employment, with a strong human rights-based approach and respect for the environment.

During 2021 the programme is expanding its operations to new areas. This requires that a wide array of baseline data from multiple thematic fields is collected from these areas to allow for adequate monitoring and evaluation of the programme results-delivery.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK

To collect the baseline data, the PFP 2 is looking to employ 17 field surveyors for forest inventory and for interviewing forestry entrepreneurs.

The team will be divided into two groups so that 5 surveyors will be conducting preliminary data collection involving a participatory GIS exercise, and 12 surveyors will be conducting the main survey involving a forest inventory and interviews with forestry entrepreneurs. The data will be recorded electronically using handheld devices.

The assignment includes a three-day training in Mafinga. The field work will take place in the Southern Highlands and mainly in its rural communities. The survey teams will be constantly moving from one community to other. Overnight opportunities will be sought among the accommodation options provided in nearby villages and, when situation allows, in nearby bigger towns such as Njombe and Mafinga. Field work is done six days per week and Sundays are free by default. The expected overall duration of the assignment is about five weeks.
