I. GEF Small Grants Programme
The Small Grants Programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF/SGP) is a development programme, which is implemented through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Globally, the GEF/SGP was established in 1992 at the Earth Summit to compliment larger GEF projects by providing a window for direct participation of local, community-based organizations for projects that benefits the global environment. The GEF/SGP operates under the philosophy that global environmental challenges can be addressed effectively when local people and organizations are involved.
In Tanzania, GEF/SGP became operational in 1996. Its operations are coordinated by the Division of Environment (GEF Operational Focal Point), Vice President’s Office. The Programme devotes particular attention to community-based projects, which link conservation of global environment and improvement of local livelihoods. In this regard, GEF/SGP is primarily a CSO – led and focussed programme. Only CSOs that include, NGOs, CBOs and FBOs are eligible for technical and financial support under this programme whereby grants of up to US$ 50,000 per project are given to successful proponents. In addition, NGOs eligibility criteria includes full compliance to the NGO Act No. 24 of 2002 (as amended).
