A. Objective

Every year, UNEP observes International Mountain Day (IMD) on 11 December and celebrates the ecosystems and communities of mountain areas. The 2020 virtual Mountains High session aims to

Promote climate action with the audience and showcase solutions

  • Create awareness about the effects of climate change in mountains
  • Appreciate mountain ecosystems, i.e. through footage of The Last Ascent, a documentaryabout the decrease in glacier ice on Kilimanjaro
  • Provide a platform for science to exchange about main threats to mountain ecosystems andsolutions to protect them
  • Showcase work of the United Nations in the area of sustainable mountain development andclimate change adaptation.
  • Inspire the audience to use sports for positive change.
