In preparation for the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) negotiations, a group of experts came together in late 2021, convened by GEO BON and Future Earth, to compile a series of scientific briefs showing assessments and recommendations for select GBF targets and goals. In order to distill key aspects of these briefs and make their overarching messages more accessible to the broader scientific community, these experts authored and published the first of a series of Policy Perspective companion pieces in PLOS Climate and PLOS Sustainability and Transformation. Background
The articles summarize key focus areas to help reverse the decline of biodiversity. These areas include increasing natural ecosystem area by 2030, focusing on specific restoration needs to meet this goal, and cautioning that specific efforts must respect biodiversity criteria and rights of local populations.
The Articles
In the PLOS Climate paper, the authors share opportunities to minimize climate change impacts on biodiversity, how biodiversity can support adaptation and mitigation, and how climate action can avoid negative impacts on biodiversity.
The first PLOS Sustainability and Transformation paper describes actions to achieve ambitious net gains in natural ecosystem areas, and the second paper addresses the complexities of setting ambitious international restoration objectives for terrestrial ecosystems.
