The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (MFA) provides grants for development research activities as part of Denmark’s international development cooperation. While the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015 constitute an overall thematic framework for development cooperation and research, the overall objective of the Danish support to research cooperation is to contribute to new solutions with new knowledge. In accordance with this objective, grants will be awarded to strategic research cooperation, which generates new knowledge relevant to the needs and strategies of partner countries, to Denmark’s cooperation with these countries as well as including substantive elements of research capacity strengthening.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (MFA) provides grants for development research activities as part of Denmark’s international development cooperation. Phase 1 is the first step of a process in which applicants submit project ideas leading to prequalification. Phase 2 is the submission of a full application by those selected in Phase 1 (“prequalified”).The total allocation available for development research funding (Window 1 and Window 2) in 2021 is approximately DKK 180 million.
The funding is conditional on approval by the Danish Parliament of the 2021 Finance Bill.The deadline for submission of Phase 1 applications in Window 1 is 26 February 2021 at 13:00hrs CET. Applications must be submitted in English and electronically via the e-application system (SurveyMonkey Apply).

Japan Fund for Global Environment — Environmental Conservation Grants 2021
The Japan Fund for Global Environment makes grants to non-profit organizations in Japan and developing countries for field projects in environmental conservation. Grants are for grass-roots projects and range from 500 thousand to 3 million JPY. Each non-Japanese applicant needs to have an agent in Japan to communicate and apply in Japanese language on behalf of the applicant. The application deadline is 02 December 2020. Know more

- It is only possible to apply for a Completion Grant upon successful usage of a 2nd Booster Grant
- A Completion Grant is up to £15,000
- Activities must focus on developing important elements identified in the project supported by the 2nd Booster Grant.
- The grant can ONLY be given to an organisation

- The review process can take up to 6 months.

FORMAS Mobility grants for early-career researchers 2020. The aim is to encourage researchers who have recently completed their doctor degree to visit new research environments and get the chance to make new contacts, learn new tools, explore research issues with a new direction and expand their networks. The host organisation or organisations may be located outside or within Sweden. Formas funds research within the fields of environment, agricultural sciences and spatial planning and preferably for inter- and transdisciplinary research questions. Duration: 24-48 months. Eligibility: Researchers who have obtained their PhD between 1 January 2017 and 1 September 2020. Mobility grants for early-career researchers may only be administered by a Swedish university, college or other Swedish public organization. Deadline 28 April 2020
David Hopper Prizes for Leadership in Research for Development are awards for outstanding achievement in the field of international development, bestowed in memory of IDRC’s first president . The prizes are intended to recognize two individuals for whom IDRC support has been foundational to their careers and whose sustained original thought and leadership have led to significant positive societal impact within a development context. NWO Talent Programme – 2020 Vici round is now open for pre-proposals. This funding schemegives senior researchers the opportunity to build up their own research group, often in anticipation of a tenured professorship. The research group must become structurally embedded in the research institution. Eligibility: Researchers who obtained their PhD no more than 15 years before 1 March 2020.Researchers working at a foreign institution are eligible to apply. If awarded, the project must be carried out at a Dutch institution recognised by NWO. Amount: Max. Euro 1.5 million for 5 years. ILO Skills Challenge Innovation Call – Finding solutions to skills mismatch. A good solution to address skills mismatch takes both the supply and demand sides of the labour market into consideration. It seeks to connect the two sides and develop a more holistic solution in the process. ILO with the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs invite innovation ideas or solutions. Nestlé Foundation. Entry level research grants can support a small research project such as a PhD thesis project with up to USD 20,000. PhD students have to submit a letter of intent together with their thesis advisor & mentor. Detailed, evidence-based information about the public health relevance of the project as well as its immediate impact and sustainability must be included in the letter of intent. Priority is on human nutrition research issues dealing with maternal and child nutrition, including breastfeeding and complementary feeding, macro- and micronutrient deficiencies and imbalances, interactions between infection and nutrition, and nutrition education and health promotion. TWAS-CAS Young Scientists Award for Frontier Science.This newly established award will recognize scientists not older than 45 who are living and working in a developing country. The first edition of the award will recognize achievements in the physical sciences, including physics and chemistry. Award amount: USD 10,000. Deadline: 15 May 2020
TWAS─Atta-ur-Rahman Award in Chemistry This annual award, sponsored by the Searle Company Ltd, is given to a chemist not older than 40, national of a Scientifically and Technologically Lagging (STL) country, who has been living and working there for a minimum of two years immediately prior to his/her nomination. UG Nestlé PhD Scholarships for Research Excellence The University of Ghana has received a grant from Nestlé to support PhD students in conducting interdisciplinary research in the broad areas of Food and Nutrition Security, and Climate Change. Eligibility: Ghanaian nationals or permanent residents; First or Second year PhD students in a discipline closely related to thedefined research themes (e.g. Food Science, Nutrition, Food Process Engineering etc).The grant will provide support for tuition, research costs and stipend starting from the 2020/2021 academic year. ETH4D Research Challenges: Special call to respond to COVID-19 outbreak on the African continent The goal is to support project-based research between ETH Zurich researchers, practitioners (i.e. from the private sector, NGOs, governmental organisations) and partners from low- and middle-income countries. The research questions for this special call must help to address the prevention of a spread of an infectious disease in African countries or help to mitigate the negative impact of a pandemic/epidemic on people’s health or livelihoods living on the African continent. The objective of ETH4D Research Challenges must be the development, testing, evaluation or implementation of an innovative product, policy or service – involving a technology (as part of the solution or as part of the research). TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme provides postdoctoral researchers from sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, with the opportunity to make a three-month ‘Cooperation Visit’ to a research institute in Germany. Such visits must be undertaken within 12 months of the award.DFG will cover health insurance, travel expenses and provide subsistence costs for the stay in Germany. Eligibility: PhD obtained not earlier than 2015; sub-Saharan African nationals; hold a research position in SSA; not be a previous recipient; all academic fields. Aquatic Pollutants transnational research and innovation call. The main applicant and co-applicants must have doctoral degrees. Grants can be given to researchers at Swedish universities, university colleges or research institutes with research assignments. Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, SIDA, support the participation of researchers from low-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and other sub-Saharan African countries where Sweden has bilateral development cooperation. Only proposals addressing aspects of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), including resistant pathogens, resistance genes and antibiotics and other antimicrobial substances, under any of the themes and subthemes defined in the call are eligible for funding. RUFORUM Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) Research Grants – The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), with funding from Carnegie Cooperation of New York invites applications for PhD research grants. The research supported through these grants should as much as possible have a participatory action research approach, working closely with a range of stakeholders and thus contributing to the RUFORUM mission of linking universities more closely with rural communities and with research, extension, development and policy-making agencies. Eligibility: Applicants must be registered at a PhD Programmes in one of the 126 RUFORUM Network universities as Graduate Teaching Assistant and must have completed and passed their course work before the grant can be awarded. The Doctoral qualification should not be older than 3 years and women are specifically encouraged to apply. The applicant would need to be attached to a RUFORUM University faculty. The goal of this call is to increase high retention rate of these graduates in Africa to help strengthen African universities and research institutions to meet the growing demand for higher education and research for creating knowledge and prosperity in the continent. RUFORUM Post- Doctoral Fellowships with Uganda National Agricultural Research Organisation. The focus of the programme is on rigorous, intensive agricultural research training relevant to Africa, and research projects will be carried out in Uganda. Research projects focusing on any aspect of Horticulture (Oil Palm or tomato research), Beans or root crops (cassava or sweet potato) will be considered. The Fellowships will allow for sandwich attachments to NaCRRI and Makerere University. The proposal should clearly articulate how the Fellow plans to integrate postgraduate students who will be part of the research team. GSMA Innovation Fund for Driving Mobile Internet Adoption and Digital Inclusion is supported by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), BMZ, the GSMA and its members and are now open for applications. Funded projects will focus on innovations that overcome a number of the barriers to mobile internet adoption including Accessibility, Affordability, Digital Skills and Safety and Security, and will look to demonstrate commercially sustainable models that can be scaled and replicated in similar environments. Future Leaders – African Independent Research (FLAIR) Fellowships are for talented African early career researchers who have the potential to become leaders in their field. These fellowships provide the opportunity to build an independent research career in a sub-Saharan African institution and to undertake cutting-edge scientific research that will address global challenges facing developing countries.Research must be within the Royal Society’s remit of natural sciences, which includes but is not limited to biological research, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. Eligibility: Sub-Saharan African nationals; holder of PhD; early career researcher (2-8 years of experience); in SSA research institution; with scientific research proposal aligned with the scheme notes. TWAS Young Affiliates 2020 (TWAS-SAREP). The World Academy of Sciences Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Partner invites nominations for suitable candidates for the TWAS Young Affiliateship. Benefits: Affiliates are invited to participate in TWAS general meetings and conferences free of charge as well as provide feedback to TWAS on how the Academy can respond to the needs of young scientists in developing countries. Duration: 5years. To be eligible, the nominated scientists must have PhD, be aged 40 or less, living and working in a TWAS Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Partner developing country for at least the past three years and have an excellent track record of at least 10 international publications in peer reviewed journals. GCHERA World Agricultural Prize: Two USD 100,000 prizes will be awarded in 2020 each to an individual academic/faculty member from a higher education institution in recognition of the academic/faculty member’s life time achievements working in the disciplines relating to the agricultural and life sciences – including but not limited to agriculture, forestry, natural resources, food, bio-based products, bioenergy, rural development and the environment. Solutions for Women – the global tech challenge – The World Bank Group – CES will reward scalable, innovative solutions that seek to empower women in four areas: 1) Platform, 2) Digital skills; 3) Online content and 4) Enhancing digital access. Winners to be announced at CES 2021 planned in Las Vegas, USA in January 2021. The challenge is open to all eligible for-profit and public interest organizations that are currently in the process of scaling solutions to bridge the gender digital divide. TWAS-SN Bose Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme. The S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Science in Kolkata, India, and TWAS have established a fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue postdoctoral research in physical sciences. IsDB-TWAS Joint Research & Technology Transfer Grant 2020: Quick-Response Research on COVID-19 Technologists and researchers from IsDB Member Countries are invited to submit research and innovation proposals that can help address challenges directly and indirectly related to COVID-19. Qualified researchers from 57 IsDB countries* are invited to form a joint research collaboration consisting of two groups from different countries working on areas related to the COVID-19 pandemic.Grants will enable the collaborating groups to purchase the research equipment and strengthen the facilities they need to enhance their partnership and productivity and to support the mobility of scientists between the participating institutions for training purposes. Partners should ensure, through the grant, that enough consumable supplies are available during such visits. AIMS-NEI Fellowship program for Women in Climate Change Science seeks to increase women’s participation in, and contribution to, a more sustainable societal response to climate change.Funded by IDRC and Government of Canada. The Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists is an annual prize awarded to early-career scientists. The prize is presented in four categories: Cell and Molecular Biology; Genomics, Proteomics and Systems Biology Approaches; Ecology and Environment; and Molecular Medicine. Applicants are to submit a 1000-word essay that is judged by an independent editorial team organized by the journal Science. Essays are judged on the quality of research and the applicants’ ability to articulate how their work would contribute to the scientific field. Eligible entrants must have been awarded their doctoral degree in 2018 or 2019. The winners from each category will compete for the Grand Prize. The Grand Prize winner will receive 30,000 USD and be published in Science magazine. The three remaining category winners will receive 10,000 USD each and be published in Science online. AI for Earth Innovation. Artificial intelligence tools for a more sustainable planet. The National Geographic Society and Microsoft’s AI for Earth program are partnering to support novel projects that create and deploy AI tools to improve the way we monitor, model, understand, and ultimately manage Earth’s natural resources for a more sustainable future. The grants given by the partnership will support projects that use cloud computing to create and deploy open-source models and algorithms that make key analytical processes more efficient in the field. This partnership is focused on supporting projects that will build tools such as applications, application programming interfaces (APIs), or packages to be shared. Microsoft will help the successful applicants make their models and tools available for use by other environmental researchers and innovators. Amount: Applicants may request $5,000 to $100,000. Innovative approaches to enhance poverty-related diseases (PRD) research The purpose of this call for proposals is to fund a number of small- to medium-scale clinical trials and/or clinical research studies that can deliver proof-of-concept or validation of smart, highly innovative technologies or concepts to prevent, treat or diagnose PRDs in sub-Saharan Africa. Proposals that combine medical and pharmaceutical technologies with other scientific areas such as mobile technologies and digital technologies (mHealth and eHealth), big data processing, and other emerging technologies are particularly encouraged, as are proposals involving small- or medium-sized enterprises. Eligibility: consortium of at least three legal entities that are independent from each other, are from two different participating European states and at least one entity established in a sub-Saharan African country. TWAS-NRF Doctoral Programme South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and Department of Science and Technology (DST) are working in partnership with TWAS to advance science in developing countries through the NRF-TWAS Doctoral Fellowships. TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowships are tenable at research institutions in South Africa for a maximum period of three years. They are awarded to scientists from developing countries (other than South Africa) to enable them to pursue PhD research in the natural sciences. NRF will provide travel to and from South Africa, a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. The language of instruction will be English. Age limit: 32 years.
