Luther Luhangano Lulandala

Prof. Luther Luhangano Lulandala is a member of the Academic Staff in the Department of Ecosystems and Conservation and I lead research work that spearheads the understanding of the science of components integration in the management and conservation of tropical ecosystems. I have been competitively awarded funds worth more than US$ 1,900,000 since joining the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in May 1976.

Besides being a staunch advocate and active promoter of forest ecosystems establishment, conservation and protection as the means of climate change mitigation and amelioration, I am ardent spear-header of Agroforestry research and practice as the only most effective solution to resources management, climate change regulation and mitigation and assurer of food security

I had been Head of the Department of Forest Biology (the now Department of Ecosystems and Conservation) between 1990 and 1996 and, at various periods headed various Faculty (now College) and Departmental Committees e.g. Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research Committees, thereby providing strategic leadership in Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism particularly with regards to ensuring the development of quality student curricula and assessment strategies.

Teaching

I teach and examine various courses both at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels at the Sokoine University of Agriculture. I currently teach Agroforestry to Forestry and Agronomy students at the Undergraduate level and Forestry and Management of Natural Resources for Sustainable Agriculture (MNRSA) at the Postgraduate level.

From the last 2-year work contract (26 December 2015 – 25 December 2017) and the current work contract (26 December 2017 – 25 December 2019) with the University, the main thrust of my work continues to be teaching, research, and consultancy.

Students Supervision

During the 2–year work contract that ended on 25 December 2017 (26 December 2015 – 25 December 2017), I had supervised 12 Undergraduate students who had graduated. I am currently supervising 4 of them – making a total of 16 Undergraduate Special Projects. I had, at the same time, supervised 11 Postgraduate students (10 M.Sc and 1 Ph.D Researches) of which 8 have already graduated while I currently continue with the supervision of 3 MSc students. Since becoming a member of the Academic Staff of Sokoine University of Agriculture in 1976, I have supervised over 100 Undergraduate Special Projects, over 60 MSc and 4 PhD Postgraduate dissertations/theses. The most recent works (2015-2018) are summarized in the tables below.
