My name is Prof. Salim M.S. Maliondo. I was previously the Head of the Department of Forest Biology (1996 – 2002) I lead a research team recognised internationally for its work in understanding the science of tropical forests and agricultural soil management.
As a Postdoc Fellow in Canadian Forest Service (Maritimes Research Centre) I conducted research on environmental Impacts of Whole-Tree Harvesting for Bioenergy and produced two thematic reports. After joining the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in 1991, I conducted research in the Silviculture Plantation forests agroforestry, impact of Fire on a Montane Forest in Western Usambara, part of the Eastern Arc Mountains.
I have supervised research to Masters and PhD students in natural forests and agroforestry setting. Between, 2009 –to 2015, I was the Programme Coordinator of the ‘Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Mitigation’Programme in Tanzania. This capacity building Programme had a budget of USD 2M and involving three public Universities (SUA, UDSM, ARDHI) and TMA in Tanzania, and four Institutions in Norway training 100 Masters and PhD students and implementing 21 research projects and eight Strategic interventions projects.
Over 100 scientific publications were published in international refereed Journals and Books. In addition to excellence research, I have been involved in training foresters in Canada as a PhD Graduate Teaching Assistant between 1982 to 1986 and later in Tanzania from 1991 to date. My main drive has been to train wee-rounded foresters capable of adapting and responding to changing forestry landscape. I have also served as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Tanzania Association of Foresters. I have also been a Chairperson for Faculty Postgraduate Senate Committee.
