Forestry Programme on Business, Entrepreneurship and Marketing expected to be launched at SUA will raise the value of forest products in the country

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) through the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism aims to launch the Forestry Business, Finance and Marketing programme as a strategic strategy to provide graduates in the forest field who are going to raise the value chain of forest products in the country.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Sokoine Agricultural University (Administration and Finance) Prof. Yasinta Muzanila in the center with other workshop participants.

This was stated on November 7, 2019 in Dar es Salaam by Prof. Yasinta Muzanila who represented the Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture, Prof. Raphael Chibunda.

Prof. Muzanila said if the Programme was successfully established then it would increase the scope of students to participate fully in increasing national income through the forest sector in the country.

She said the Programme is unique as it would enable the graduate to hold a career in forestry, economics, finance, marketing and trade and thus eliminate the challenge of unemployment as one would be self-employed and sometimes help tree farmers manage their business.

“On the other hand there are new challenges in forest education, for example many graduates have the prospect of being employed in urban areas immediately after graduation and their expertise is more needed in rural areas,” said Prof. Muzanila

Commenting on the introduction of the new programme, the President of the Tanzania Forestry Industry Federation, Mr. Ben Sulus said the current government aims to boost the economy through industry so the Programme is timely and will boost the forestry sector as it is one of the major sources of industrial raw materials.

Referring to the importance of introducing the Programme, Prof. Felister Mombo from the department of Forest and Environmental Economics said there is a need to ensure a consolidation of forestry, economic and trade issues to address various trade challenges in the forest sector.

In this single day workshop the senior lecturers, Prof. Yonika Ngaga and Prof J.M. Abdallah who is the Head of the Department of Forest and Environmental Economics showed how this Programme will be read and taught. This workshop has involved stakeholders from the Government, the Private Sector and the various Specialists.
