Experts and institutions involved in the provision of professions and tree research have been asked to persuade the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania to establish a long-term natural tree seed store to avoid the continued loss of these trees due to major damage in natural forests.
Responding to the various points raised in the debate at the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), the Senior Assistant Conservation Commissioner and the Manager of the Tree Seed Biology section from the Forestry Services Agency Tanzania (TFS) Fandey Mashimba has said that currently the rate of destruction of forests and natural trees is high, so there is a need for stakeholders to influence the authorities in order to build a store that will help to take care of those seeds.
“It is obvious that every day the natural forests are getting burnt due to human activities where trees like mvule, munga and mpingo continue to disappear without the nation preserving its seeds” said Mashimba.
In addition, he said there is a need for decision-makers and law-makers to use forestry experts in making decisions and enacting laws aimed at protecting and preserving forests so that they can advise them properly on all issues related to the forestry sector.
On his part, the retired Director of Forests and Bees, Dr. Felician Kilahama, giving his experience in the forestry sector, said there is no way to do anything if experts are not listened to and appreciate their contributions in controlling and dealing with the destruction of forests that cause climate change.
Dr. Kilahama has emphasized that natural forests are enabling forests in other sectors and that some of the many things related to forests are stuck due to the existing systems in the country, especially the political will.
