Sokoine University of Agriculture offers a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management, which aims to equip students with technical, analytical, managerial, and entrepreneurial skills in wildlife enterprise and related industries for sustainable development. The program prepares graduates for self-employment and postgraduate training leading to research in wildlife and related careers. This year, like in previous years, students went to Tarangire National Park for Game capture field studies where animals are thoroughly examined after being darted. These studies provide students with effectiveness in wildlife management skills that will be useful in managing wildlife resources after they graduate.
The field-based training program offered by the department of wildlife management focuses on wildlife ecology, wildlife management, and related skills. The program produces wildlife experts with technical, analytical, managerial, and entrepreneurial skills in wildlife enterprise and related industries for sustainable development. Graduates are able to conduct basic and applied wildlife research, extension work, and consultancy, and address environmental and conservation issues. The admission requirements for the program include two principal passes in science subjects.
The department of wildlife management has partnerships with several major in-country partners, including the College of African Wildlife Management-Mweka and Klub Afriko Cultural Centre. The research training focuses on modules covering resource inventory (biodiversity assessment), wildlife and landscape ecology, habitat mapping, and other related topics. In addition to the Bachelor’s program, Sokoine University of Agriculture also offers a Master of Science in Wildlife Management and Conservation.
