SUA to Establish University Carbon Business Training Forest in Ruvuma Region

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) through its College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism intends to establish a University Business Training Forest in the Madaba District Council in Ruvuma Region as part of the university’s strategies to manage and increase internal revenue generation to effectively fulfill its responsibilities.

This was revealed by the Chairman of the Sokoine University of Agriculture Council, Hon. Judge Mohamed Chande Othman, during the inauguration of the Cross-Cutting Training Building on August 6, 2024, in Morogoro at the Edward Moringe Campus, where the Guest of Honor was the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Samia Suluhu Hassan.

“The forest will cover an area of 10,000 hectares and will be used for carbon trading and the production of other forest products. This goes hand in hand with purchasing modern equipment for processing logs,” said Hon. Judge Othman.

Hon. Judge Othman mentioned other strategies, including establishing a university investment company that will oversee all non-academic production units capable of generating revenue for the university, strengthening the university’s commercial farm located at the Solomon Mahlangu Campus, and all units including the Dairy Unit, Pig Unit, Animal Feed Production Farm, and continuing to plant sisal, where 200 hectares have already been planted and 100 hectares will be harvested this year.

“The University Council is also continuing to draft and improve internal policies, regulations, and guidelines to manage the implementation of various university responsibilities in all strategic areas, considering laws, procedures, and other directives issued by the Government to ensure the university effectively fulfills its responsibilities,” said the Chairman of the SUA Council.
