Among the various PhD students undergoing the learning process at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), conducting seminars represents a critical stage. These seminars provide an opportunity for students to present their research results and outline the progress of their studies to the university community, particularly to program coordinators and the postgraduate office.
The postgraduate department of SUA scheduled dates for seminars: as 13th – 14th June 2024 and 24th – 25th June 2024. Upon learning of these important events, I immediately began my preparations. I focused on thoroughly preparing myself, creating my PowerPoint presentation, and ensuring I was fully ready to communicate the findings of my research.
I had the privilege of presenting my research findings twice during these seminars. I am glad to share the key lessons I learned from these experiences.
Takeaways from the first Seminar Presentation
The first seminar brought together the forest science community for an enlightening session led by REFOREST PhD students. As one of the PhD candidates in Forest Sciences under the REFOREST program, I presented my research findings to this esteemed academic audience.
Anticipating the seminar date eagerly, I was slated as the third presenter. This early position allowed me to better prepare and familiarize myself with the audience and conference dynamics. During my presentation, I effectively communicated the objectives and results of my research through narratives, visuals, and tables, enabling the audience to grasp my work effortlessly and provide constructive feedback. This experience was pivotal, not only for receiving valuable suggestions to enhance my manuscripts but also for gaining exposure to scientific writing and learning from the intriguing study results presented by my peers. The perspectives of examiners, discussants, and invited participants on my research were truly enlightening, and their feedback was invaluable. Despite the challenges and pressure, the seminar concluded successfully, serving as a valuable stepping stone in my preparation for the second seminar held just one week later.
Takeaways from the second Seminar Presentation
The second seminar built on the lessons learned from the first seminar. The preparations for this event were more thorough and informed by prior experience. Once again, I was scheduled as the third presenter, which allowed me to regain familiarity with the audience and refine my presentation further. I adopted a similar approach in presenting my research findings, aiming to effectively convey the outcomes of my work.
These seminars have proved crucial in shaping my perspective and prompting me to explore new avenues for improving my research. The questions, comments, and suggestions offered by the discussants, examiners, and participants were particularly valuable. Their constructive feedback and encouragement provided me with renewed motivation to continue refining and enhancing my work.
Overall view
The most rewarding aspect of both seminars was the feedback session that followed each 20-minute presentation. During this session, the chairpersons opened the floor for questions, comments, and suggestions, which proved to be pivotal in gauging how well my work resonated with the audience. This interaction not only allowed me to directly engage with attendees, clarifying points and addressing their inquiries about my findings, but also highlighted statements causing confusion among conference participants. Moreover, the seminars provided insights into both the strengths of my research and areas needing improvement. The invaluable interactions during these sessions not only provided feedback but also served as inspiring opportunities to disseminate my findings effectively.
In conclusion, as a PhD student, I seized these opportunities to share my research findings, receive constructive criticism, and gain valuable experience in effective communication at various stages. Importantly, these presentations helped me to assess my preparedness, identify areas for improvement, and refine my time management skills in anticipation of my upcoming PhD defence.
I would like to express my gratitude to the REFOREST programme coordinators for their continuous support and updates throughout this process. Their facilitation has been invaluable in helping us prepare effectively for our presentations.
